The decision to leave a company for a new opportunity vs. staying and progressing within your current environment isn’t easy. I’ve worked with many people who have regretted their decision to move quickly to a new job, only to realize that the new company or team has greater pitfalls than their former position. However, staying around in an environment that doesn’t match your career goals isn’t the best choice either.
So how do you know when the timing and opportunity are right for changing jobs? Corporate Path Leadership has developed a 90-day plan for doing that work with you.
STEP ONE: Identify What’s Important to You
The primary goal of the plan is to help you first assess your personal career attributes and the importance of them in relation to each other by ranking 17 job characteristics. Examples: For some people, believing in the cause of their company might be at the top of the list. For others, it could be an advancement opportunity, or stability of the company or industry.
STEP TWO: Determine How Your Current Employer Stacks Up
Once you have these factors identified and ranked against each other, it is time to shine a light on how these same factors are rated in your current company and position. For me, this becomes one of those big “ah hah” moments for participants. They start to understand more clearly what aspects of their job are significant frustrations vs. those aspects that fall into a category of mild annoyances.
STEP THREE: Rate Future Opportunities
The last analytical step is to apply this same approach and rating to a prospective new position. My experience is that even though candidates going through the interview process aren’t able to precisely answer and evaluate new employees/teams on all of the career attributes, the exercise helps them to ask smarter questions while interviewing and ultimately gain a more robust view of how a new position stacks up against their existing one.
The good news is that all the analysis that builds confidence to make a “stay or go” decision can be done in less than three months! And the work is something that you can keep with you and apply and adapt on your own for the rest of your career.
So as you enter the summer season and are thinking about greener pastures in your future, take the time to make a small investment in yourself to build the confidence to know you’re making a smart career move within your organization or somewhere brand new.
